Who Are You, Really? Where to Secure Your True Identity
“We are so many things, all the time. And I know it can be overwhelming figuring out who to be…I have some good news: It’s totally up to you. I also have some terrifying news. It’s totally up to you.”
- Taylor Swift, NYU Commencement Speech, May 8, 2022
Being true to your “authentic” self is one of our culture’s highest values. And of course, knowing who you truly are is one of our greatest needs. Loss of identity is a devastating and terrifying state for anyone because one of the most important questions that every person must answer is “who am I?”
Our challenge today, however, isn’t in recognizing the importance of our sense of identity, but in determining where our identity is found. In our culture that espouses personal freedom as life’s highest goal, as Taylor Swift expresses it, identify formation becomes yet one more form of exercising our own personal freedom. But is that really where our identity comes from? Does determining our own identity really set us free?
In this episode, Scott and Shawn bring the critical subject of identity into their continuing journey to learn to think like Jesus. Tune in to this episode as they talk through the inevitable difficulties we face when trying to create our own identity and how we can allow the mind of Jesus to inform and shape where true and lasting identity is found.
