Countering Pluralism: Jesus Says I Am THE Way to God
In a world with so many religions, each with a host of faithful followers, are the days of Christianity’s presumption to be THE way to God over? Isn’t such belief just a stubborn holdover from the west’s oppressive colonial past? Isn’t the true path of Jesus one of openness and tolerance to other views, faiths, and beliefs?
Many Christians today want to say “yes!”. They feel that the path toward rescuing Christianity and making the gospel truly “good news” for a new age is to do away with such exclusive notions of “one way to God”. After all, in a world where people are clamouring for acceptance and inclusion, an exclusive message like “one way to God” will never get a hearing, right?!
As reasonable as that may sound, if Christians are to remain Christian, we need to continue to allow Jesus to speak. Since he is God, what he says matters more than what we think. And we just can’t get passed the very clear language he used to point to himself as “the way” to God.
Tune in to this fifth episode in our “Hard Teachings of Jesus” series where Scott and Shawn will look at Jesus’ claim to be the only way to God, how some Christians are re-interpreting it to mean that he isn’t the only way, and what conclusion we can draw from a clear and consistent reading of Jesus’ own words.
